One of the biggest hurdles to purchasing an electric vehicle is charging. Many people may give up on buying an electric car from the outset if they don't have charging facilities at home, for reasons such as living in an apartment.

For users who haven't previously interacted with EVs, it might be surprising that there are currently many charging services available. To support all of them, you would have to install an app for each provider on your smartphone.
The usability of chargers and apps varies for each charging service, so anyone other than a tech enthusiast like myself would definitely find it troublesome.

In other words,The current problem with electric vehicle charging isn't about where the charging stations are located, but rather the difficulty in figuring out which charging service is easy to use and also affordable.It is.

As of 2026, Japan's charging services have diversified, and if you're not careful, you might end up "just paying a monthly fee and not getting your money's worth at all." Therefore, we have compiled a "Reverse Lookup, Shortest Path Guide" for all EV users to determine the optimal service for them.

1. "3 Payment Types" You Should Know First

First, let's decide which arena you're going to fight in.

Table 1 shows three types of billing available in Japan.
Except for Tesla, pay-as-you-go electricity charges (kWh) are still in the trial phase. Therefore, for EVs other than Tesla, you will use the charging card service provided by the car manufacturer or use the charging facilities of a provider that offers hourly pay-as-you-go services.

While Nissan's ZESP3 is the best charging card offered by car manufacturers, only Nissan electric vehicle owners can currently sign up for it.

Additionally, the rapid chargers currently installed at highway service areas are provided by eMobility Power. For those who frequently use highways, the e-Mobility card will likely be the top priority.

Check the items that apply to you and find your ideal card.

A. "My house is a gas station" faction

Style: I charge my phone almost exclusively at home (100%). I only charge it on the go a few times a year when I travel.

Recommendation: Combine "Base fee 0 yen"

You don't need to create a specific card; it's sufficient to have the "Eco Q Den" or "ENEOS Charge Plus" app on your smartphone.
Paying a few thousand yen a month is like throwing money down the drain.

B. "Adventurers on the Weekend" Faction

Style: Home charging is available, but I take long drives on the highway on weekends.

Recommendation: "Automaker Genuine Card" or "ENEOS Premium"

If you need to charge around 100-200 minutes per month, it's more cost-effective to pay the basic fee and lower the per-unit price.
Especially ENEOS often has gas stations attached, which is appealing because it's easy for beginners to enter.

C. "Mainly charges a battery" faction

Style: Cannot charge at home in an apartment or similar, or drives hundreds of kilometers daily for work.

Recommended: "e-Mobility Power (e-MP)" or "Manufacturer's Top Plan"

Above all, "anywhere, cheap" is paramount. The e-MP card, with Japan's largest network, is a must.

Be mindful of the "30-minute barrier"

Many Japanese fast chargers have a 30-minute time limit. Knowing how much your car's battery will recover in 30 minutes (20kWh? 40kWh?) will give you a sense of the cost per minute.

Is there a "rollover" for the free portion?

Services like Nissan's ZESP3, which allow you to roll over unused portions to the next month, help prevent losses in months when it rains or you're too busy to go out.

App usability check

The price of the card itself is important, but let's choose a service that has an app to see in real-time if the charger is currently available.

As charging services proliferate, it's become very difficult to figure out which service will be the cheapest based on how much you use it each month.

Therefore, I've compiled a table showing the effective per-minute charging cost based on monthly estimated usage time. With this, you won't have to hesitate anymore! Could there be a cheaper charging plan than ZESP3 for Nissan owners, depending on how often they use it!?

To reiterate,Fast charging at highway service areas can only be done with an e-MP card or app.(ZESP3 and some automaker cards support e-MP.) ENEOS, Eco Q Den, and Terra Charge are installed outside of highways.
Therefore, if you are only considering service areas for charging on your route, your options will be limited.

However, considering time efficiency, charging at service areas is beneficial. But unless you're undertaking a very long highway journey, charging at service areas isn't essential. If you can plan to charge at convenience stores or other places after exiting the highway, other options become available.

As of June 2026, Terra Charge is the cheapest option during its campaign for those who use fast charging infrequently.
The app has been improved and is easier to use. Except for the difficulty in locating the QR code on the charger, I personally like Terra Charge as a charging service.
However, the number of installations is not yet very high, so planning is needed for use.
